Editing tools

The editor has tools that insert LaTeX for you, complete commands as you type, and point out problems before you compile. This page covers what each one does.

The toolbar above the editor works in both code and visual mode, for LaTeX files. Hover a button to see its name, the LaTeX it inserts and its shortcut. On narrow screens, the extra buttons move into the More formatting menu.

Group Buttons
Text style Bold (\textbf), Italic (\textit), Underline (\underline), Typewriter (\texttt), Strikethrough (\sout, adds the ulem package)
Structure The text style menu: Part and Chapter (in book-like classes), Section, Subsection, Subsubsection, Normal text
Lists and math Bulleted list, Numbered list, Inline math ($…$), Display math (\[…\], or a Numbered equation from its menu)
References Link (\href), Reference (\ref), Citation (\cite), Label, Footnote
Environments Abstract, Theorem (its menu lists every theorem-like environment your preamble declares), Proof (adds amsthm)
Floats Insert table, Insert figure, Extract text from image (OCR)
Pickers Symbol picker, Add LaTeX package
Navigation Find and replace, Go to line, Keyboard shortcuts

Reference and Citation insert the command and open the list of your labels or bibliography entries.

If you can only view the project, the toolbar buttons are greyed out.

Type \ to see matching commands. Autocomplete also suggests:

  • environment names after \begin{, and adds the matching \end{} for you,
  • package names in \usepackage{} and class names in \documentclass{},
  • commands you defined with \newcommand in your preamble,
  • labels for \ref, \eqref, \cref and similar commands, including labels in other files of the project,
  • bibliography entries for \cite and similar commands, matched by key, title, author or year from every .bib file in the project,
  • file names for \input, \include, \includegraphics, \bibliography and \addbibresource.

Press Ctrl+Space to open the suggestions yourself. Press Tab or Enter to accept one.

Hover a \ref to preview its target, or a \cite to see the bibliography entry. A citation key that is not in any .bib file shows “Citation “key” is not in the bibliography”.

Wavy underlines in the editor come from:

  • The last compile. Errors and warnings from LaTeX are shown on the lines they belong to. See Compile logs and errors.
  • Missing packages. If you use a command such as \href, \url, \cref or \includegraphics without loading its package, the editor underlines it and offers a quick fix, such as “Add \usepackage{hyperref}”.
  • Live error checking (the LaTeX language server), on plans that include it. It checks .tex files as you type, without compiling, and adds more completions. The LSP dot in the editor header shows whether it is connected. See luzbase.com/pricing for the plans that include it.

Click Find and replace or press Ctrl+F (Cmd+F on a Mac). You can match case, match whole words, use a regular expression, or search only inside your selection.

Find and replace works in the open file only. There is no search across the whole project.

Click Symbol picker to open a panel with Greek letters, operators, arrows, set theory, logic and many more symbols. Search by name, for example “alpha” or “integral”, and click a symbol to insert it. Outside math, the symbol is wrapped in $…$ for you.

  1. Click Add LaTeX package.
  2. Search by name, description or tag.
  3. Click Add next to a package. Luzbase adds the \usepackage line to your preamble.

Packages already in your preamble show In preamble, with a button to remove them.

  1. Click Insert table.
  2. In the Insert Table dialog, pick the size on the grid (up to 8 by 8) and choose whether you want a Header row.
  3. Click Insert.

Luzbase inserts a table with a tabular, a caption and a label, ready to fill in.

Click Insert figure and choose an image or PDF file. Luzbase uploads it and inserts the figure.

You can also drag an image into the editor, or paste one. The image is uploaded to an existing image folder such as figures/ or images/, or to a new images/ folder.
