Downgrade to Free

When Pro ends, your account moves to Free. Your projects, files and snippets stay where they are. What changes is what you can add from then on, and one thing that is eventually deleted: old version history beyond the Free window. This page explains each limit.

Nothing changes on the day you click Switch to Free. You keep Pro until the end of the period you’ve paid for, and your account moves to Free on that date. See Manage your subscription.

The Free limits then apply to projects you own. Projects other people own keep following their owner’s plan. See Whose plan counts.

Area What happens on Free
Collaborators Everyone already in your projects stays. In a project with more collaborators than Free allows, new invitations are refused, and pending invitations can’t be accepted, until you remove someone or upgrade. Billing tells you how many of your projects are over the limit.
Storage Your files stay. If you’re over the Free allowance, new uploads are refused until you delete files you no longer need or upgrade.
Version history Versions older than the Free history window are hidden. Their file contents are later deleted. See below.
Private snippets Your private snippets stay private. You can’t make new snippets private.
Photo captures The Free monthly limit applies from your next capture.
Compile queue Your compiles use the standard queue.
Live error checking (the LaTeX language server) Live error checking stops. The editor, autocomplete and compiling keep working.
Zotero and Mendeley sync Libraries you linked can’t be synced, by you or by your collaborators. The .bib files stay in your projects as they are. You can still unlink libraries and disconnect your accounts.

Free keeps a limited window of recent version history. The project owner’s plan sets the window for everyone in the project.

What happens to versions older than the window:

  1. They’re hidden straight away. The History tab lists only versions inside the window. The latest version on each branch is always kept, however old it is.
  2. Their file contents are deleted later. After an account has been on Free for 60 days, Luzbase starts deleting the stored file contents of versions older than the window. Before the first deletion in a project, the owner gets an email about that project, and nothing is deleted for at least 14 days after it.
  3. What’s never deleted: the latest version of every branch, any file still used by a version that’s kept, and the list of versions itself. A version whose contents were deleted is marked as no longer stored, and it can’t be restored.

If you upgrade again before the contents are deleted, all of that history comes back.

Accounts that have always been on Free don’t get the 60-day wait. Contents of their versions older than the window are deleted once the 14-day email notice has passed.

Delete files you no longer need from your projects. Keep in mind that a file older versions still use keeps counting until nothing in the project uses it. Deleting a whole project frees all of its space. See How storage is counted.

Upgrade again at any time from Billing. Your limits go back up as soon as payment is confirmed. See Upgrade to Pro.
