Supported file types and limits

Luzbase accepts the file types a LaTeX project needs: source and bibliography files you edit in the browser, plus images and PDFs you upload. This page lists what is allowed and the limits that apply on every plan.

Kind Extensions
LaTeX source .tex, .ltx, .tikz
Classes, packages and configuration .cls, .sty, .cfg, .clo, .def
Bibliography .bib, .bst, .bbl
Other text .md, .markdown, .txt, .csv, .json, .yml, .yaml, .log

Text files must be UTF-8. You can create them with New file or upload them.

Kind Extensions
Images .png, .jpg, .jpeg, .gif, .webp
Vector and document figures .pdf, .eps

The editor shows a preview of PNG, JPEG, GIF and WebP images. PDF and EPS files show a Download link instead of a preview.

A file’s contents must match its extension. For example, a file named plot.png must really be a PNG image.

Every other type is refused, including:

  • SVG: convert it to PNG or PDF first.
  • Fonts such as .ttf and .otf.
  • Office documents such as .docx.
  • Code files such as .py or .R.
  • Package sources such as .dtx and .ins.

These limits are the same on every plan.

Limit Value
One text file 1 MB
One uploaded image or PDF 10 MB
Files in one branch of a project 500
Total size of one branch of a project 500 MB

If a text file grows close to 1 MB, split it into smaller files, for example one per chapter, and bring them together with \input or \include.

All the projects you own share your account’s storage allowance, which depends on your plan. Storage counts:

  • The files in all your projects, including archived ones.
  • Files that only older saved versions still use. Deleting a file from the current version doesn’t free its space while an older version still contains it.
  • Files uploaded since the last saved version.

Compiled PDFs and exports don’t count. A project uses its owner’s storage, not that of the person who uploads the file.

For the current storage on each plan, see luzbase.com/pricing and Plans and limits.

File and folder paths must follow these rules:

  • Use relative paths, such as chapters/intro.tex, with no leading /.
  • Every file needs an extension, such as .tex.
  • These characters aren’t allowed: \ : * ? " < > |, or control characters.
  • When you type a name in New file or Rename or move…, these characters are refused too, because LaTeX can’t include such a file: % # $ & { } ~ ^.
  • No empty, . or .. parts in a path, such as chapters//intro.tex.
  • Names can’t start or end with a space, or start or end with a dot.
  • Reserved names are refused: CON, PRN, AUX, NUL, COM1–COM9 and LPT1–LPT9, with or without an extension.
  • latexmkrc and .latexmkrc are refused, because they would change how the project is built.
  • Length: a whole path can be up to 1024 bytes, and each part between slashes up to 255 bytes.
  • Upper and lower case: two names that differ only in case count as the same name, so Intro.tex and intro.tex can’t both exist.
